What does this mean for you, the patient?

In the United States, around 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the numbers continue to increase. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures have proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to severe obesity.* Working with ASMBS, the ACS expanded this quality program for bariatric surgery centers so that it can assist bariatric patients in identifying those centers that provide optimal surgical care.

American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network (ACS BSCN)

The American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program (ACS BSCN)

Accredits facilities in the United States that have undergone an independent, voluntary and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards. Bariatric surgery accreditation not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks, but also supports continuous quality improvement

In the United States, more than 11 million people suffer from severe obesity and an estimated 93 million people are obese. The co-morbidities associated with obesity range from diabetes and heart disease to certain types of cancers. Bariatric surgical procedures have been shown to reduce obesity, improve mortality and decrease the health risks from chronic diseases such as cardiomyopathy and diabetes. For these reasons, the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program will recognize those facilities that implement defined ACS BSCN standards of care, document their outcomes and participate in regular reviews to evaluate their bariatric surgical programs.” - http://www.acsbscn.org

Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery®

Obesity is widely recognized as a contributor to serious health risks. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the total number of Americans having weight-loss surgery more than quadrupled between 1998 and 2002 – from 13,386 to 71,733 – with part of the increase driven by a 900 percent rise in surgeries on patients between the ages of 55 and 64. Blue Distinction® provides objective information to help patients make informed decisions when choosing a provider.

Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery® have demonstrated their commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for bariatric patients.
